Minimally invasive orthognathic surgery

Minimally invasive orthognathic surgery (MIOS) is an advanced approach to jaw surgery using smaller incisions and specialized techniques to minimize tissue trauma, reduce swelling, and accelerate recovery. When the case calls for it, patient-specific guides and plates designed from the virtual plan take the place of the interim splint.

In plain terms

Jaw surgery that repositions the upper and lower jaw with less surgical exposure, aiming for a faster and easier recovery.

For patients

What it demands from the surgeon

A planning discipline that front-loads the work. The decisions that used to be made in the operating room are made weeks earlier, on screen, and the margin for improvisation narrows.

How it is measured

Each case is compared against its virtual plan after surgery, which is the basis of the published accuracy work below.
